Situated in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, the Giraffe Centre is one of the top destinations to interact with the endangered Rothschild's giraffe. Located just 20 kilometers from Nairobi city center, the Giraffe Centre provides a home for these tall giants of Africa, while offering visitors the opportunity to learn, feed, and support conservation efforts.
Founded in 1979 by Betty and Jock Leslie-Melville, a Kenyan-British couple passionate about wildlife conservation, the Giraffe Centre began with two giraffes, Daisy and Marlon. Their breeding program on their Langata property led to the creation of the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife (AFEW), which manages the centre and releases giraffes into protected areas to boost the Rothschild's giraffe population.
The centre is home to the endangered Rothschild's giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis rothschildi), known for its light, creamy coat and unique markings. These graceful giraffes are rare, and the Giraffe Centre has been instrumental in ensuring their survival in Kenya.
Visitors can feed giraffes up close on the interactive feeding platform. Using specially prepared pellets made of molasses and grass, guests can hand-feed giraffes like Daisy the Fourth. This is one of the most popular activities at the Giraffe Centre.
Interactions with giraffes educate visitors about wildlife conservation and the importance of supporting efforts to protect endangered species in Kenya.
The Giraffe Centre is a scenic location ideal for photography. With lush greenery and acacia tree backdrops, early morning visits offer excellent lighting for quality photos.
Explore the 1.5 km nature trail along the Gogo River sanctuary, which is home to over 100 bird species. Visitors can enjoy bird watching and local flora during a peaceful walk through the conservancy.
The Giraffe Centre is perfect for family outings. Children enjoy interacting with the giraffes, and there are small shops offering snacks and souvenirs for all visitors.
The Giraffe Centre has contributed significantly to saving the Rothschild's giraffe from near extinction. Many giraffes have been relocated to national parks such as Lake Nakuru National Park and Mwea National Reserve, ensuring the survival of this endangered species.
The Giraffe Centre is open daily from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
Payments accepted via M-Pesa, debit/credit cards, and cash.
The Giraffe Centre Nairobi is a prime example of eco-tourism and responsible wildlife conservation. It provides unforgettable experiences for families, photographers, and nature lovers, while supporting the survival of one of Africa’s most endangered giraffe species.
